I’m running the book club at my daughters’ school. Every week, the 5th graders meet at lunch time and discuss books. I use my pull to cajole some of their favorite authors to come in. I managed to get Kate Milford, author of Greenglass House, among others, and Jacqueline Woodson, author of Brown Girl Dreaming, among many others, to come in.
The kids went CRAZY. And to hear them, talking about the books, asking these deeply thoughtful questions…just wow. Most of these kids are readers anyway, but I can’t help but think that having the book club, having a community to celebrate books and writing and reading, it might’ve cemented this lifelong habit.
I feel like I made a mark with this. I feel like #IWasHere.
